BACKGROUND: Wiki for history, also what's an exorcist and what's a demon (so many things are demons. Fairies are demons, gods are demons, demons are demons, angels are demons, basically if it's supernatural and it's in Blue Exorcist, it's a demon).

PERSONALITY:
At first glance, Lewin Light is someone who blatantly doesn't care what anyone thinks about him. He's irreverent, has no problems with making fun of people up to and including the top exorcist on the planet. He dresses terribly, all his clothes have holes in them and haven't been washed in weeks, and he basically never showers. He's basically constantly smiling, like everything's a giant joke to him.

And he can get away with it, because he's incredibly good at what he does. He knows he's just too smart and too skilled and too powerful for anyone to tell him off.

I lack empathy for all other people.

I was born emotionally deficient. I turned out sorta all right but as a child, I was violent and interested in demon research, so people were frightened and called me a demon. That was hard for my parents.

And then about two inches under the surface of that constant smile is... not nothing, because Lewin has a lot of emotions that are actually fairly well-managed, but there's a complete and utter disregard for anyone else (he can be fond of people, especially when they're useful to him or when he's used to them being in his life, but that's rare). He doesn't care about people, not in the same way other people do, and he knows it and he's honest about it. Lewin is the sort of person who has no problem with beating up old men, or torturing an opponent for information, or straight-up murder, as long as it suits his end goals. In fact, being violent and aggressive is sort of his default, and the fact that he's constantly smiling and using polite Japanese while doing it doesn't make things any better.

I didn't mind, because I absolutely loved demons.

Lots of people in Blue Exorcist like demons. But Lewin likes demons way more than most people, and has spent his life studying them. More than just studying demons, he's learned to understand them. He summons demons using modified summoning rituals, shortening spells that are normally several sentences or paragraphs long into shorter versions (by starting the summoning chant and then saying "and so on") or even single-sentence commands. He can also exorcise demons with shortened rituals, single-words, and even just spells he's invented (which is otherwise unheard of, since demons typically are exorcised verbally only by using words from religious texts). This might sound like a powers section, but it's important to understand that this is something he can do only because of his deep interest in demons. No other human in the series understands demons as much as Lewin does, and this deep (and deeply abnormal) interest in demons is part of what makes him so powerful in his world.

But I like humans even more, and I like this world too. So I'll do anything to protect it.

Lewin doesn't really care about individuals, but he does care about humanity as a whole, and most of the aforementioned torturing people to death without remorse actions we see in canon are part of a campaign to bring down the Illuminati (a faction that seeks to destroy the world) and uncover corruption within True Cross Order (the exorcists). He's an intense, driven person, highly intelligent and intellectual, who follows leads as far as they'll take him without much regard for the safety of himself or anyone else along the way. There are a fair amount of intentional comments in the series itself as well as in promo art that draw parallels between Lewin and famous fictional detectives. He's a detective character who's seen the seedy underbelly of the universe and absolutely loves it, because it's as much part of the world as anything else.

I get antsy without someone along to provide me with a solid base for making decisions. It's possible that I'll ditch you to achieve my goals, and if you come any further, you'll be unable to turn back in more ways than one. So if you want to quit, now's the time. This is my last warning to you.

While Lewin's first approach to a situation is to grin and bullshit his way through it, he's also an extremely self-aware person and straightforward person. He might give one or two flippant answers to a question (when asked "why do you want to be an exorcist" he lied about his family being killed by demons, and basically went "lol jk my family's fine" before telling one more lie to see if he'd get called out on it) but if he gets called out on it he'll be way more honest than anyone really wants. Tied in with that honesty is a surprisingly competent grasp of his own emotional state and needs. In a series where like 99% of the nonsense happens because people can't be honest about how they feel and what they need from their support network, Lewin stands out just by being aware of things like "I need people around me who can be my morality system" and "if I'm in a bad mood I need to get away from other people to cool my head before I start getting really violent".

He might be an over-powered, under-moraled, chaos-aligned asshole with a constant grin, a hatred of baths, and a tendency to just sweep people along in his wake, but he does legitimately want what's best for the world. That's way more interesting than watching it all burn.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
First I'm listing the power I almost forgot about, which is that Lewin can see demons and ghosts and other supernatural creatures (all lumped under "demon" in his canon).

Lewin's main skill is as a Tamer, which means he can summon demons. He's mostly seen summoning demons with air/spirit affiliations (kin of Azazel, a demon king Lewin has some kind of as-of-yet unexplained connection to), like lightning demons, wind demons, and spirits. He can also form contracts with demons, and forge contracts for other people to sign with demons he controls. Nerfs as listed: here but can be edited more.

He's also trained as an Aria, someone who uses holy scriptures for exorcisms, as well as being able to create barrier spells and seals to control demons. He's extremely talented in this area, being able to create new fatal verses for demons who couldn't be exorcised using words before, and abbreviating the complicated designs of magic circles.

He also has certifications in Doctor class exorcism, which means using herbs to exorcise demons and treat demonic illnesses or effects.

And he's trained as a Knight (swordsman) and Dragoon (gunner) as well.
